A woman’s body does not run on a 24 hour schedule
Share
Have you ever wondered why some days you are full of energy and on other days you can barely gather strength for the basics? Why you are sometimes bursting with ideas, social and motivated, and other times you just want to withdraw and have some quiet?
Many of us quickly assume that something is wrong with us. That we are disorganized, too emotional, lazy or “inconsistent”. But the truth is very different.
The problem is not you. The problem is the rhythm you are trying to live in.
24 hour rhythm ≠ female rhythm
Most of the world is built around a 24 hour circadian rhythm. Wake up, work, be productive, go to sleep and repeat the same the next day.
This rhythm works quite well for the male body. The female body, however, has in addition to the daily rhythm a hormonal cycle that lasts about 28 days (a little different for each of us) and this cycle strongly affects how we feel physically, mentally and emotionally.
This means that throughout the month your energy, focus, motivation, need for movement, need for rest and mood naturally change.
A short overview of the four phases of the cycle
Menstrual phase
This is a time of slowing down. Your body is doing a huge amount of work in the background and often needs more rest, warmth and gentleness. It is not the time for pushing yourself but for regeneration.
Follicular phase
Your energy starts to return. There is more clarity, momentum and a desire for new beginnings. It is a great time for planning, learning and lighter movement.
Ovulation
This is the peak of energy. More confidence, openness, communication and physical strength. Many women feel most “themselves” in this phase.
Luteal phase
The body starts to wind down. Focus can decrease and emotions may feel more intense. We need more structure, routine and self care.
No phase is better or worse. Each one has its purpose.
What happens when we ignore our cycle?
When we expect ourselves to be equally productive, equally in a good mood and equally capable every single day, chronic fatigue, PMS symptoms, irritability and guilt often show up, because we feel that we “cannot keep up”.
In reality we are simply trying to live in a rhythm that does not match our body.
What changes when we start living with our cycle?
Once you understand what is happening in your body throughout the month, something very important usually shifts.
- You have more compassion for yourself and feel less pressure.
- Your workouts become more effective because you know when it is time for strength and when it is time for rest.
- You feel more stability throughout the month and fewer extreme ups and downs.
Your cycle stops being an obstacle and becomes your compass.
Cycle support is not “spoiling yourself”
Understanding and supporting your menstrual cycle is not a trend or a luxury. It is a basic form of taking care of your body.
In an ideal world we would eat perfectly balanced, phase aligned meals every day, rest enough and move in a way that suits each phase.
Reality, however, often looks different.
This is why gentle, well thought out support can be so helpful. It can guide your body through the different phases without interfering with it or trying to “fix” what is not broken.
