10 most common questions about menstrual discs

For many women, a menstrual disc is still something new, so it’s completely normal that a lot of questions come up. It’s not really a product you buy spontaneously and without thinking, but something you research first to see if it’s really right for you.

Every week we receive many messages and questions in our inbox, DMs and under posts, and we try to answer as quickly as possible. To help you find the answers faster (and also in cases when we can’t reply right away), we prepared this guide with the most frequently asked questions.

1. How do I know which disc size is right for me?

The Moonloom menstrual disc is available in two sizes:

  • Small: Suitable for a lighter flow or those with a low cervix (disc diameter 65 mm)

  • Large: Ideal for medium to heavy flow or those with a high cervix (disc diameter 75 mm). The larger size is also recommended for those who have given birth vaginally.

You’re probably now also wondering: “How on earth do I know what kind of cervix I have?” You can check this quite easily. Insert your index finger into the vagina and if you can insert it fully before touching the cervix, your cervix is likely high. If you can only insert about half of your finger, then your cervix is probably low.

2. How do I correctly insert a menstrual disc?

Fold the disc in half (into a figure 8 shape or the letter C) and gently insert it into the vagina, angled slightly downward toward the tailbone. Once inside, use your finger to push it behind the pubic bone, where it “hooks in” and stays in place.

It’s important that you are relaxed and don’t rush the process — and another tip: the best time to try it for the first time is at home, calmly and without stress.

3. How do I know if the disc is inserted correctly?

A correctly inserted disc does not cause discomfort, you don’t feel it while walking or sitting, and it doesn’t leak. If any of these sensations appear, it means the disc isn’t positioned correctly. In that case, we recommend taking it out and reinserting it. If you check with your finger, the front rim of the disc should be positioned behind the pubic bone, not lower in the vagina.

We also recommend trying the disc for the first time at home, simply so you can become confident using it.

4. Do I need to boil the disc every day?

No. We recommend that you boil the disc before first use and after your period ends (for 3–5 minutes). During your period, simply empty it, rinse it with water (preferably also with a mild intimate soap), and reinsert it.
Boiling it too often is unnecessary and can even shorten the product’s lifespan.

5. My disc is leaking – what now?

Don’t worry. Here are some reasons why this can happen. Leaking most commonly occurs due to incorrect placement (not positioned far enough behind the pubic bone). What you can do is remove and reinsert the disc, check its position, and empty it more frequently during your first cycles. If leaking continues, it may also mean that the disc is too small. In that case, we recommend trying the larger size.

One big advantage of a disc is that it can sometimes partially empty itself when you pee (if it’s very full). Don’t let this scare you — it’s completely normal. When you pee, the pelvic floor muscles relax, creating space for the disc to shift slightly and release some blood. You can simply ignore this or, if it feels better, empty and reinsert the disc afterwards.

6. Can I swim or go into water with a disc?

Yes — that’s one of the great advantages of a disc! A menstrual disc is completely safe for swimming, the sea, pools, saunas and sports. Because it collects blood inside the body and doesn’t absorb liquids, water can’t get in and blood can’t easily escape. Enjoy!

7. Is sex with a disc really safe?

Yes, a menstrual disc is a period product that allows for penetrative sex during menstruation. The disc sits high near the cervix and doesn’t interfere with intercourse. However, it’s important to know that the disc is not a contraceptive and is more suitable for gentler intercourse (every experience is individual). Try it and you’ll see whether it works for you.

8. How long does delivery take?

Delivery usually takes 1–3 working days within Slovenia, although we really do our best to ship so that you receive the disc the very next day after ordering. Once the package is shipped, you’ll receive a tracking number so you can follow it. If you urgently need a disc, write to us and we’ll do our best to get it to you as soon as possible.

9. What is the disc made of and is it really safe?

The Moonloom menstrual disc is made from 100% medical-grade silicone, free from BPA, latex
and phthalates. The material is hypoallergenic, doesn’t absorb liquids and is safe for long-term use. So you can be completely at ease. Just make sure to boil it before first use.

10. What is the difference between a menstrual disc and a menstrual cup?

The purpose of both a menstrual disc and a cup is to collect blood and give you a feeling of security during your period. However, there are differences. Some of the main ones are that the disc sits behind the pubic bone, has a larger capacity, is usually easier to insert since it doesn’t rely on suction, and doesn’t interfere with sexual intercourse. It’s also often more suitable for active women who didn’t find comfort using a cup.

It’s completely normal if you still have more questions — and if you do, feel free to write to us via Instagram messages, email, or the chat box on our website. We’ll do our best to reply as soon as possible and help you out.
